Description:
New York: Harper & Row, 1964. Fine in very good plus jacket. Very scarce first edition of the allegorical children's classic, rarely found today in the first printing. A simple story of love-driven selflessness and a lifelong bond, THE GIVING TREE has touched generations of readers. First published in 1964, THE GIVING TREE remains one of the most elusive of Silverstein's books in the first edition. The earliest issue is indicated by the price on the dust jacket (as here); other early printings may be determined by the 4-line copyright notice and the portrait of a bearded upper half of Silverstein on the rear panel of the jacket (as also here). 8.75'' x 7''. Original green pictorial paper boards. In original unclipped ($2.50) green pictorial dust jacket with code "0964" on front flap and portrait of Silverstein on rear panel, waist-up and bearded. Illustrated by Silverstein in black and white throughout. 57, [1] pages. Only a touch of soiling to book. Jacket with one small chip and a bit of faint… Read More

Description:
Evanston, Illinois, U.S.A.: Harper and Row Publishers 1964, First Ediiton Thus First edition, first state, without dust cover. We've put the book in a reprinted, replica true first dust cover with Mylar cover, so that it makes a lovely presentation. This is a matte finish (not glossy) hardback in very good condition, there is slight scuff mark up in the upper right corner of the front cover, perhaps a slight sticker mark, but it's minimal. It has typical edge wear, as to be expected for a book its age. But again, it's light wear. Otherwise it is very clean both inside and out. It shows Shel Silverstein as the copyright holder on the back side of the title page in 4 lines of text. Overall it's simply a wonderful copy. It would be ideal for a gift or presentation. Text is clean and unmarked. Again, no original dust cover, but we're including a reprinted replica (waist up portrait with curly hair on back) of the first in clear Mylar protector. -- About the story: The Giving Tree is an… Read More

Clean and Unmarked Text: New York : Harper and Row, 1964 Quality Hardback : hard cover edition in Very Good condition, some slight wear to edges, as normal for age of book; and in very good reprinted dust jacket with some minor egdewear, mylar protected, the portrait on the back of dj is a waist up photo of Silverstein with curly hair and full beard. First free end paper has a small notation in the upper right corner. A good book to enjoy and keep on hand. Or would make a great GIFT IDEA for the fan / reader in your life. Editorial Reviews : To say that this particular apple tree is a 'giving tree' is an understatement. In Shel Silverstein's popular tale of few words and simple line drawings, a tree starts out as a leafy playground, shade provider, and apple bearer for a rambunctious little boy. Making the boy happy makes the tree happy, but with time it becomes more challenging for the generous tree to meet his needs. When he asks for money, she suggests that he sell her apples.… Read More
