Description:
Paris: The Olympia Press, 1955. First edition, association copy of Nabokov's masterpiece from the library of Pulitzer Prize-winning American poet Elizabeth Bishop. First issue with the price of 900 francs on the rear panel of each volume. Octavo, 2 volumes, original green wrappers. In near fine condition with light rubbing, some toning to the extremities. Bishop and Nabokov both gained international recognition for their mastery of prose in America in the mid-20th century. It was not until Nabokov began writing in the English language that he gained a reputation as a great writer, and it was the present volume that catapulted his career. Referred to by Dwight Garner as "the most purely gifted poet of the 20th century", Elizabeth Bishop's first book North & South, was first published in 1946 and won the Houghton Mifflin Prize for poetry. She would go on to become the Pulitzer Prize winner for Poetry in 1956, the National Book Award winner in 1970, and the Neustadt International Prize for… Read more

Description:
Paris: Olympia Press, 1955. first edition. Very Good. FIRST EDITION of one of the most important novels of the twentieth century. WITH IMPORTANT PROVENANCE: From the Bureau Littéraire Clairouin, Nabokov's literary agency who was instrumental in its publication. "Vladimir Nabokov is an artist of the first rank, a writer in the great tradition ... [and] Lolita is probably the best fiction to come out of this country (so to speak) since Faulkner's burst in the thirties. He may be the most important writer now going in this country. He is already, God help him, a classic" (Critic Conrad Brenner, in 1958). Controversial since its conception, Lolita was rejected by American publishing houses until finally accepted by the avant-garde Olympia Press in Paris and published in a fragile two-volume format. WITH IMPORTANT PROVENANCE: with stamp of the Bureau Littéraire Clairouin, Nabokov's literary agency, on front free endpaper of each volume. Nabokov on the Bureau Littéraire Clairouin and the… Read more

Description:
Paris: The Olympia Press, 1955. First edition. Near fine. First issue of the true first edition of one of the defining novels of the 20th century, and one of the most misunderstood. LOLITA's language seduces the reader in the same way its infamously unreliable narrator Humbert Humbert wants us to think Lolita seduced him, when in fact it is the abuser's manipulations the entire time. A novel that describes tragic and gruesome events in some of the most exquisitely beautiful prose ever put to paper, LOLITA's poetic meditations show Nabokov - who witnessed many of the 20th century's ugliest events firsthand - grappling with the many ways we delude ourselves with words. Properly approached, this is a book from which no one, the reader included, emerges unscathed. A landmark of free speech, a cultural touchstone, and a work of terrible empathy. Two volumes, 7'' x 4.5'' each. Original green printed wrappers with borders in white and black and price of "Francs: 900" on rear of each volume. [2], 188, [2];… Read more

Paris: The Olympia Press, 1955. First edition of Nabokov's masterpiece, published in Paris by the Olympia Press in 1955. First issue with the price of 900 francs on the rear panel of each volume. Octavo, 2 volumes, original green wrappers. In near fine condition with light rubbing, some toning to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A nice example. "Brilliant One of the funniest and one of the saddest books that will be published this year" (New York Times). "Lolita blazes with a perversity of a most original kind, for Mr. Nabokov has distilled from his shocking material hundred-proof intellectual farce. Lolita seems an assertion of the power of the comic spirit to wrest delight and truth from the most outlandish materials. It is one of the funniest serious novels I have ever read; and the vision of its abominable hero, who never deludes or excuses himself, brings into grotesque relief the cant, the vulgarity, and the hypocritical conventions that pervade the… Read more

Description:
Paris: Olympia Press, 1955. First edition. Two volumes, bound in green printed wrappers. First editions. Each volume bears the original printed price of 900 francs on back cover of each, with a faint sheen of sticker ghost where a sticker was removed. The price was raised to 1200 Francs after the first edition was printed, with stickers affixed to copies unsold at the time of the price change. The faintest sticker ghosts here likely indicate that this belongs to the second state of the first edition. A beautiful set, with the covers still vivid, showing some faint wrinkling to to each spine, some faint rubbing to extremities, and a hint of foxing to the top edge of each text block only, else fine.

Description:
(Jerusalem: Printed in Israel for The Olympia Press by Steimatzky's Agency, 1955. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. First Israeli edition, and the first hardcover edition (there was also a wrappered issue of the Israeli edition). Two volumes in one. Original blue leather-textured papercovered boards in dustwrapper. Offsetting to the front and rear endpapers as usual, small and light stain on rear fly leaf, else near fine in a modestly rubbed, very good dustwrapper with some tanning to the white portion of the spine and a few modest chips. The first hardcover edition; the true first edition was published in Paris in two wrappered volumes. Stamped with the number 1442 on the front flap, Nabokov bibliographer Michael Juliar believes all copies of the Israeli edition were numbered, both hardcover and wrappered. A very uncommon issue of a high spot of modern literature. Nabokov wrote the screenplay for the 1962 Stanley Kubrick film with James Mason, Shelley Winters, Peter Sellers, and Sue Lyon in the title… Read more

Description:
New York: Putnam & Sons, 1955. First American edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. Near Fine, a tight square copy, top stained red. Some offsetting to the edges of boards. In a like jacket with slight sunning to spine and shelfwear to panels. Some creasing and small closed tears to top of rear panel with no paper loss. Red endpapers. Internally clean and unmarked. This controversial novel is frequently on the list of top books from the past century. Originally released in France because American publishers were wary of such "obscene" material, Lolita tangles sexual taboo and violence with incredibly seductive prose. "Shocking is the reaction the author somehow manages to elicit from his readers: empathy. Readers always read, I think, out of a tremendous curiosity about other human beings, we're looking for another soul on the page, and that's what Nabokov has so fearlessly, so complexly, so gorgeously given us. In a lesser writer's hands, we could easily dismiss Mr. Humbert as a monster, but Nabokov… Read more

Description:
New York, Phaedra, 1967. . First edition in Russian; 8vo; 304pp., a.e.g., marbled endpapers; modern black morocco binding, spine with raised bands and gilt ruled, title in gilt, a good copy. Translated by the author himself, this edition of one of the most famous books of the twentieth century is scarce despite its publication date. The novel was first printed in English in 1955 and was a resounding success, with numerous translations appearing soon after (although Nabokov only thought that the French version was any good). It had not, however, been published in Russian and Nabokov writes in the postscript that, 'in publishing Lolita in Russian, I am pursuing a very simple aim: I want my best English book - or, let us say more modestly, one of my best English books - to be translated correctly into my native language. It's the whim of a bibliophile, no more.' Savin 284.

Description:
New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1955. First American edition and first trade edition of Nabokov's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Photograph of Nabokov by Maclean Dameron. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. One of the most celebrated books in history, Nabokov's Lolita quickly attained classic status upon publication in 1955. Notable for its controversial subject, the novel was adapted into a film by Stanley Kubrick in 1962, and again in 1997 by Adrian Lyne in addition to several adaptations for stage. "Lolita blazes with a perversity of a most original kind. For Mr. Nabokov has distilled from his shocking material hundred-proof intellectual farce. Lolita seems an assertion of the power of the comic spirit to wrest delight and truth from the most outlandish materials.
