New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1923. Undetermined. near fine. 1st Edition. 351pp. Octavo. Illustrated dust jacket over publisher's navy cloth with titles in gilt to spine. Illustrated panel to front board. Lower corner of front board lightly bumped and rubbed. Unclipped jacket lightly age-toned with a few spots of discolouration to spine and a what appears to be a varnish stain along spine on back panel. Head and tail of jacket spine and extremities have benefited from some discrete professional restoration. Edges of text block and first few pages foxed. Endpapers age-toned. Small bookseller's stamp to front pastedown and gift inscription from year of publication on ffep, else internally clean. Illustrated frontis with tissue guard. Boston: Frederick A. Stokes, 1923. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. Frontispiece in color by M.L. Kirk. Contemporary gift inscription on the front fly, a couple of pages roughly opened resulting in some marginal chips to a couple of facing pages, top edge soiled, a very good copy in a near very good dustwrapper with several small nicks and tears, and some overall soiling. The first Emily book, in the exceptionally scarce jacket.

Foxing to page edges and text early and late; endpapers browned; small "white out" on front free endpaper, else a VG clean and unworn copy of the scarce British first, published the same year as the US and Canadian editions. Violà locates only 3 copies of the UK first, including LMM's own now at U Guelph. LAC copy in red boards is in fact a cheap reprint. ; Octavo .
