New York: Simon and Schuster, 1955. First Edition. Near Fine/Very Good. First edition, first printing. Signed by both Langston Hughes and Roy DeCarava, inscribed to a former owner on the verso of the front free endpaper. Hardcover issue bound in publisher's original black paper-covered boards over white cloth spine lettered in black. Near Fine with toning to pages and spine cloth. In a Very Good unclipped dust jacket which is toned, a bit soiled and edge worn; the rear spine joint has completely separated but been repaired from the verso with mending tissue. DeCarava had won a 1953 Guggenheim Fellowship to photograph African American life in Harlem. It was a chance meeting on a Manhattan street corner in which DeCarava showed his photographs to Hughes. Hughes was so enamored with these photographs he immediately took them to his publisher, who agreed to publish them so long as Hughes wrote accompanying text. The result, a beautiful and vibrant visual encapsulation of life in 1950s Harlem, strung… Read more

Description:
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1955. First edition of the classic collaboration between Roy DeCarava and Langston Hughes. Small octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by Langston Hughes on the front free endpaper, "Especially for Lucian Stanton whose photographs I very much enjoyed seeing- Sincerely- Langston Hughes New York Feb. 23, 1960." An excellent example in the original dust jacket. Roth 101, Parr & Badger, The Photobook I, 242; The Open Book, 160. The hardcover is much more uncommon than the wrapper edition. "Acknowledged as the most influential black writer of his generation, and as one of the greatest American poets of all time here composed a fictional story to accompany DeCarava’s images, creating a lyrical tale about imaginary characters to go with photographs of real people" (Roth, 138). Hailed as "an important step forward" in the history of photobooks, Sweet Flypaper of Life proved especially significant in its "design, featuring a… Read more

Description:
NY: Simon & Schuster. 1955. A Roth 101 title. Photographs by DeCarava; text by Hughes. With an autograph postcard signed by DeCarava, dated in 1982, thanking the recipient for her "lovely and generous" letter. The image on the postcard is one by DeCarava. The card is fine, laid into a very good copy of the wrappered issue of the book, which has a spine lean and rubbing to the joints. Together with the recipient's copy (with her bookplate, also dated 1982) of Roy DeCarava: Photographs, the exhibition catalog from a 1975 show at Houston's Museum of Fine Arts. Near fine in stapled wrappers. Laid into this are a press release and a promotional card for a 1982 show at the Witkin Gallery in New York. DeCarava was an African-American photographer from Harlem whose work was immortalized in a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1996. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good.

Boldly signed by Roy Decarava on the title page. In fine condition, lacking the dust jacket. Hailed as "an important step forward" in the history of photobooks, Sweet Flypaper of Life proved especially significant in its "design, featuring a pacy, cinematic style. It is also a book that had more impact in its cheaper paperback edition, since, radically, Hughes’ text begins on the cover"… Read more
