Description:
New York: Simon and Schuster, 1955. First Edition. Near Fine/Very Good. First edition, first printing. Signed by both Langston Hughes and Roy DeCarava, inscribed to a former owner on the verso of the front free endpaper. Hardcover issue bound in publisher's original black paper-covered boards over white cloth spine lettered in black. Near Fine with toning to pages and spine cloth. In a Very Good unclipped dust jacket which is toned, a bit soiled and edge worn; the rear spine joint has completely separated but been repaired from the verso with mending tissue. DeCarava had won a 1953 Guggenheim Fellowship to photograph African American life in Harlem. It was a chance meeting on a Manhattan street corner in which DeCarava showed his photographs to Hughes. Hughes was so enamored with these photographs he immediately took them to his publisher, who agreed to publish them so long as Hughes wrote accompanying text. The result, a beautiful and vibrant visual encapsulation of life in 1950s Harlem, strung… Read more

Description:
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1955. First edition of the classic collaboration between Roy DeCarava and Langston Hughes. Small octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by Langston Hughes on the front free endpaper, "Especially for Lucian Stanton whose photographs I very much enjoyed seeing- Sincerely- Langston Hughes New York Feb. 23, 1960." An excellent example in the original dust jacket. Roth 101, Parr & Badger, The Photobook I, 242; The Open Book, 160. The hardcover is much more uncommon than the wrapper edition. "Acknowledged as the most influential black writer of his generation, and as one of the greatest American poets of all time here composed a fictional story to accompany DeCarava’s images, creating a lyrical tale about imaginary characters to go with photographs of real people" (Roth, 138). Hailed as "an important step forward" in the history of photobooks, Sweet Flypaper of Life proved especially significant in its "design, featuring a… Read more

Description:
NY: Simon & Schuster. 1955. A Roth 101 title. Photographs by DeCarava; text by Hughes. With an autograph postcard signed by DeCarava, dated in 1982, thanking the recipient for her "lovely and generous" letter. The image on the postcard is one by DeCarava. The card is fine, laid into a very good copy of the wrappered issue of the book, which has a spine lean and rubbing to the joints. Together with the recipient's copy (with her bookplate, also dated 1982) of Roy DeCarava: Photographs, the exhibition catalog from a 1975 show at Houston's Museum of Fine Arts. Near fine in stapled wrappers. Laid into this are a press release and a promotional card for a 1982 show at the Witkin Gallery in New York. DeCarava was an African-American photographer from Harlem whose work was immortalized in a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1996. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good.

In a Very Good+ dust jacket with price blacked out and a small crossed-out marking nearby, toning, light soiling, light edge wear and a light stain down the front spine joint. A nice survival of this fragile jacket. DeCarava had won a 1953 Guggenheim Fellowship to photograph African American life in Harlem. Description:
New York: Simon and Schuster, 1955. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good -. A solid copy of the 1955 stated 1st printing, in its less common hardback edition. Tight and VG+ to Near Fine (very light offsetting along the edges) in a crisp, price-intact ($2.95), VG- example of the fragile dustjacket, with a small degree of chipping at the spine ends, light creasing and wear to the edges, and mild soiling along the panels. Still though, presentable and attractive, and internally, clean as could be, with no writing or markings of any kind. 12mo, one of the great pairings of text and image in 20th century African-American lieterature, with Langston Hughes's moving narrative beautifully complementing Roy De Carava's keenly-felt gravure photographs.

Description:
New York: Simon and Schuster, 1955. First edition stated. Very Good. 18 cm; 98 pages. This copy SIGNED by Hughes and by DeCarava. In photo-pictorial wrappers, lightly worn, with sunburned fore-edge extending about 15mm onto wrappers. References: Roth 138; Parr/Badger I 242; Hasselblad 160; Auer 357. A unique fusion of the verbal and the visual, The Sweet Flypaper of Life combines 142 photographs of black family life in Harlem (by Roy DeCarava) with a fictional narrative inspired by the photos by Langston Hughes. It is considered the first monograph by a Black author collaborating with a Black photographer. Simon and Schuster published the volume simultaneously in cloth (about 300 copies) and paper (about 22,000 copies), which quickly sold out and became rare. This copy boldly signed "Sincerely, Langston Hughes" in green ink, followed by DeCarava's autograph in black ink.

Description:
Simon & Schuster, 1955. Book. Very Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition.. A nice, tight, square copy of this first edition there is a stain affecting the front cover and lower margin of some of the pages, but does not obscure the text. There is some age discoloration to pages. This renowned, life-affirming collaboration between artist Roy DeCarava and writer Langston Hughes honors in words and pictures what the authors saw, knew and felt deeply about life in their city.Hughes' heart-warming description of Harlem in the late 1940s and early 1950s is seen through the eyes of one grandmother, Sister Mary Bradley. We experience the sights and sounds of Harlem through her learned and worldly eyes, expressed here through Hughes' poetic prose. As she states, "I done got my feet caught in the sweet flypaper of life and I'll be dogged if I want to get loose.".
