Description:
London: Macmillan and Co, 1977. First edition. Hardback. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8" by 5". None. A first edition of this Mediaeval Whodunnit by Ellis Peters. "This intriguing novel stands out from those contemporary mysteries that find their strength in forensic detail, promiscuous sex and so on." "Ellis Peters is a distinguished and popular novelist of suspense who has pulled off something of a tour-de-force in setting a classical whodunnit in the Middle Ages." Ellis Peters is a nom-de-plume for Edith Mary Pargeter. Pargeter wrote many works of history and historical fiction, however she is best known for her murder mysteries, particularly her medieval-detective series 'The Cadfael Chronicles'. In a brown cloth binding in an unclipped dustwrapper in an acetate protective covering. Externally, smart with just minor shelfwear. Dustwrapper is smart with just minor edgewear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Near Fine

Description:
London: Macmillan, 1977. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/fine. A very nice copy of the first Brother Cadfael novel. In this book Edith Pargeter combined her excellent historical novel abilities with her nom-de-plume Ellis Peters' well-constructed mysteries and started the boom in historical mysteries that continues to this day. There are many earlier examples of the form, but this is where it takes off and becomes a major publishing category. Historically important, well written, and a scarce book to find in nice condition. This copy has a previous owner's minuscule inscription on the front free endpaper (signature and date of 10 Dec 77, and the cryptic notation "F.E." indicating it was purchased through British bookseller Francis Edwards Ltd.), and very slight bumping to the spine, both head and tail, creasing the jacket slightly. The jacket is unclipped, and the book was not read more than once or twice. A nice copy of a cornerstone volume. Any photo attached to my listings are of the actual… Read More

London: Macmillan. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 1977. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 0-33323224-0 . True first edition of the novel that introduces Brother Cadfael. This is a clean ex-library copy; the only internal library marking is an inked stamp on the copyright page. There are very faint tape ghosts on the top and bottom edges of both boards; edges of text are lightly soiled. Front and rear endpapers have been professionally replaced. The dust wrapper is bright, clean and very nearly fine, with absolutely no indication of the book's ex-lib status. Overall a flawed but quite attractive copy an uncommon and important book. .
