Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, 1976. Near fine. First trade edition in first-state jacket, warmly inscribed in the year of publication: "11/30/76 / Tom and Barbara McDermott, / I want to join Stan and / Marilyn in wishing you a / Very Merry Christmas! / Alex Haley." ROOTS is a saga of dislocation and strength in the face of brutality, reckoning with the complexities of ancestry in the African diaspora caused by the transatlantic slave trade. It begins in 1750 on the coast of The Gambia, West Africa, tracing the lives of multiple generations up to the birth of Haley himself. Michael Eric Dyson explains what ROOTS represented to the descendants of slaves in the United States: "No longer were we genealogical nomads [...] Haley wrote black folk into the book of American heritage and gave us the confidence to believe that we could find our forebears even as he shared his own" ("Haley's Comet"). The 1977 television adaptation was a major cultural event, with an audience of nearly half the… Read more

Description:
Garden City: Doubleday, 1976. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Contemporary signed presentation copy, and it's a good association, inscribed in ink, "September 1976. Dinah Shore, lovely, gracious lady - from our family to your family! Sincerely, Alex Haley." Some storage unit mustiness, else near fine in a very good dustjacket. This is Haley's quest for his genealogical history, starting in 1750 (contrast today when "roots" means the Church of the Magic Moonbeam tracing its origins all the way back to 2004). And Roots was a ‘just what it needed' contribution to America's bicentennial, historically enlightening and emotionally rewarding. It won a well-deserved Pulitzer Prize and, in 1977, it became the prototype television documentary miniseries, winning 9 Emmys.

Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, 1976. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 6 1/4 X 9 3/8 Inches. Stated "First Edition" on the copyright page. Original price of $12.50 intact on front flap. Signed and inscribed by Haley on the FFEP. Very early signature, dated two months after the books initial release in August of 1976. No need to cover the importance of ROOTS on American culture in the late 1970's. Like most sellers, I have listed in the "Literature" category and not the "Autobiography" category due to Haley's own admission of creative license as well as the plagiarism trial brought by Harold Courlander (The African). Haley notably lost his court battle and had to pay Courlander $650,000. Gutters a bit dusty and a hint of shelf wear to boards, else a fine copy. Jacket exhibits some scuffing and light wear to edges. Three pieces of scotch tape reinforcement to back of jacket at spine ends.
